Gongboxoi Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Himalayan North Belt. The Gongboxoi Formation was designated by Wang Naiwen , Liu Guifang and Chen Guoming in 1983. The section for the designation is at Kadong -Duoque-Kamadingla of the Duoque District of Nagarze County, Xizang (90°07′E; 28°08′N). The reference section is at Gongboxoi (Longbuxue) -Shelangreshan-Bajiutang of the Nagarze County, Xizang (91°00′E; 28°06′N).
Lithology and Thickness
The present formation is divided into two members: Lower member is built up by gray green tuffaceous shale and siliceous shale with a layer of 30 m lever-red chert and jasperite, with more than 50 m thick basalt at the base, with gray green medium- and fine-grained sandstone nodule in the shale, bearing abundant Radiolaria in the jasperite, exceeding 500 m in thickness. Upper member is dominated by gray green siliceous shale, intercalated with a set of 40 m quartz sandstone and sandy conglomerate and a set of 20 m gray chert and jasperite, bearing small limestone lenses and tuffaceous beds in the shale, exceeding 500 m in thickness. The formation is 1000 m in thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation lies unconformably on the underlying Dobgyu Fm
Upper contact
Conformable contact with the overlying Jomadinla Fm.
Regional extent
The present formation occurs in the Duoque and Gongboxoi of the Nagarze County of Xizang. It is persistent in lithology. In the Gongboxoi district the Upper Triassic is seen to contain exotic blocks bearing bivalves, ammonites, brachiopods, belemnites, etc.
